A beginners guide to Google Page Rank
If you want to find out how highly rated google thinks your website is then checking out the Google Page Rank value is one way of finding out.
To view your google page rank you will need to download the google toolbar for internet explorer. When you load up a website the google page rank bar will indicate a value between 0 and 10.
The scale is logarithmic starting at least importance of 0 and highly important and prominant websites having a page rank of 10.
Page ranks may be denoted as PR1 | PR2 | PR3 | PR4 | PR5 | PR6 | PR7 | PR8 | PR9 | PR10, though PR0 usually implies that the site currently has not been rated.
For example - the BBC main website has a page rank of 9, Amazon's uk site has a Page rank of 8. To give you an idea of the logarithmic nature of page rank, there are billions of websites but only around 150 have a page rank of 10!
The 'page' in page rank actually refers to one of the founders of Google - Larry Page.
How is Page Rank Calculated?
The exact algorithm for calculating google page rank is a closely guarded secret which, like the search algorithm itself, is updated from time to time in a continuous process of refinements.
One thing for sure though is that the page rank is an attempt at putting a value on the importance seen by others for the website in question.
How Can I Improve My Page Rank?
Page rank is a measure of how important your website is seen by others. Each website which links to your site is seen as providing a vote for your website. However, getting thousands of links from low page rank websites wont help you get a high ranking yourself.
The trick then is that you need links from websites which have a higher page rank than yours. How do you do this? One way is by providing articles and great quality content which people want to read and recommend you by linking to you.
